What we offer
AFC provides one of the most dynamic Youth Football programmes in New Zealand. Our Youth programme is for 14 to 17 year olds and gives players the best of both worlds - the chance to play in both a flag football competition and a full contact competition.
We provide all the equipment and no experience is necessary. We welcome registrations from new and returning players.

COMPETITION DETAILS AND FORMAT
AFC's Youth programme takes place between September and December each year. Games are played on Friday evenings at Marshland Domain on Prestons Road, next to the Prestons subdivision. Our coaches run weekly practices as well.
Our programme includes the Canterbury Youth Flag Football Championship as well as the full contact Canterbury Youth American Football Championship. Both of these competitions are 5-a-side.

YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL
Flag Football is the non-contact version of the sport and offers a safe, fun introduction to American Football. Practicing and playing in the Canterbury Youth Flag Football Championship is a great way to begin learning the basics of the game and developing the skills and knowledge required for full contact football. From this competition, we select our Canterbury Panthers Youth representative team to travel away to Nationals at the end of the season.
YOUTH CONTACT FOOTBALL
Once our flag football competition is completed, our focus moves to the full contact Canterbury Youth American Football Championship. We play a 5-a-side version of the game with modified rules. 5-a-side is a fast, exciting format which is easier and quicker to learn for new players, as they make the transition from flag football. It's designed to maximise everyone's playing time and gives increased opportunity for all players to get the ball in their hands. Players play in one of our four contact competition teams - Sharks, Pirates, Scorpions or Slayers.
OUR COACHES
Our passionate coaching group is made up of a mixture of experienced coaches and some of the best senior American Football players in Canterbury. All of our coaches are USA Football certified to coach both Youth flag football and Youth full contact football. We also have first aiders in our ranks.
As well as growth, development and fun, a primary focus for our coaches is safety. As part of our programme, coaches will deliver USA Football's Heads Up Tackling and Heads Up Blocking clinics to ensure all players understand and can perform correct technique to avoid unnecessary injury.
